익산박물관의 사리병

국립경주박물관이 특별전 ‘오색영롱’을 개최했다. 유리에 대한 이야기로 매우 특별한 기획을 한 것이다.

특별전 중 익산박물관이 소장하고 있는 왕궁리 5층 탑 출토 사리병이 있다. 이름 하나 붙이지 못해 발견한 곳의 이름을 따서 ‘익산 왕궁리 5층 석탑 사리병’이라고 붙였다.

이 사리병은 사리함과 함께 있어야 그 본질을 이해 할 수 있다. 예쁘게 만들었다가 성분이 뭐다가 중요한 것이 아니라 인문학적인 차원에서 왜 그렇게 만들었느냐 하는 게 더 중요하다.

그러면 사리병을 왜 정병 모양처럼 만들까? 이유는 이미 밝혔듯이 부처님의 사리는 근원의 본질로 돌아간 가장 청정한 결과물이다. 그래서 한없는 아리(Ari)를 품고 있기에 이를 정병(淨甁)에 모시고 그 뜻을 드러낸 것이다. 사진에서 보듯 8옆의 꽃잎은 연꽃이 아니라 모란이다. 대자연의 순환을 8절기로 드러내었다.

그리고 뚜껑의 소위 연봉모양은 모란의 꽃 봉우리이다. 이는 세상에 드러날 삼라만상의 근원인 아(A)를 형상화 한 것이다. 가장 핵심은 꽃봉오리의 가장 뾰쪽한 부분 즉 아(A)이다. 이를 위해 다시 8옆의 꽃잎으로 아(A)를 감싸고 있는 모습의 꽃봉오리를 볼 수 있다.
